Skin Types

Do you know your skin type?

Most likely, most women will answer this question without hesitation – dry, oily, combination or normal. And when they choose a cream, they will certainly look what skin type it is meant for, being fully confident that it will help them to do a right choice.
At present the classification according to skin types is very relative. The modern strategy of skin care does not rely on traditional classification any more. The majority of west specialists consider this classification to be far from reality. Nevertheless, it is not out of place at least roughly to determine the skin type as it indicates the skin thickness and quantity of adipose glands. In case your skin is delicate you should attend to prophylactic of premature aging earlier, be more careful in choosing cosmetic products, keeping in mind the risk of skin irritation. Oily skin indicates that all factors, increasing sebum secretion, will be especially active. But if your skin is normal, then you should only be careful not to disturb its harmony by rash actions.

What are the weak points of skin classification according its type?

First of all, be guided by this classification, one may buy up a lot of useless and even harmful products. For example, this classification does not take into account the peculuarities of skin rejuvenation process.  Let us suppose that we deal with dry skin with slow desquamation of corneous cells. According to the classification we must generously apply an oil-rich cream to such skin type. The cream, pasting up corneous scales, will hinder their removal from the skin surface. The layer of worn out defective corneous scales will increase and as a result the complexion will become worse and even it may result in appearance of acne or pimples. And on the contrary, if we use only a fat-free cream for oily skin, then it may lead to the lack of important oils, necessary for water-saving skin barrier.  As a result the skin may become dehydrated in spite of being oily. And if we start to dub it with alcohol preparations, then it will become sensitive and irritated, the same as dry skin.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the skin may change. Many women notice that their skin looks oily and shiny in summer and in winter it becomes dry and thin. Sometimes the areas of dry and flaky skin appear on normal skin and almost always the skin gets dry in the course of time.

What must be taken into account, choosing the regime of skin care?

First of all, the quantity of melanin – the skin pigment. The darker the skin the better its defense against harmful sun rays and the whiter the skin the more thorough protection it requires. Then, one must take into account a concrete problem. The skin with acne requires a definite regime of skin care. The same is in case of skin, prone to irritation or allergy. If you see that your skin looks dull or impure, then you need to use exfoliating products irrespective of your skin type. Just as you notice the signs of dehydration, then you must moisten the skin even if your skin secrets a lot of sebum.

Dry skin

By dry skin one implies a delicate sensitive skin which feels “astringent” after washing, without excessive shine, with pores almost invisible. Acne or pimples are rarely seen on dry skin. From anatomical point of view it is a delicate, poorly pigmented skin with small quantity of adipose glands and thin fatty layer. As a rule, the size of adipose glands of dry skin is smaller as compared with adipose glands of oily skin. Early fading of dry skin is predetermined by its thickness (the pillow under epidermis is very thin) and by small quantity of pigment, which does not provide proper protection from UV-rays.

Oily skin

It is a thick porous skin, secreting plenty of sebum. Acne and pimples often appear on this skin and it often looks “unclean”. From anatomical point of view it is a skin with thick “lining”, containing a large quantity of big adipose glands. In the course of time oily skin may turn into normal one and, what is more, it is characterized by late wrinkles appearance.

Normal skin

It is a skin with medium thickness and hardly noticeable pores. Adipose glands are functioning as much actively as to provide optimal lubrication of skin surface. Normal skin does not mind washing, undemanding and properly responds to the most of cosmetic products.

Combination skin

It is a combination of different skin types. For example, it can be oily skin on forehead, nose and chin, but dry on cheeks.  There can be also flecks of dry skin among oily and normal skin areas, or normal forehead and cheeks, but shiny nose. Usually the skin is considered to be combination skin in cases when it is difficult to decide what type of skin it is.

Dehydrated or thirsty skin

Any type of skin with disturbed water balance.  The signs of dehydrated skin are the following: increased sensitivity, flaky, fading and rough skin, appearance of dry flecks.

Couperose skin

This term is used in cosmetology and means dilatation of vessels and circulation disturbance of all skin types. Couperose is a cosmetic defect, characterized by reddening of skin surface where separate vessels twigs can be distinguished. More often couperose skin is found in women and is typical for white-skinned people. It is also peculiar to residents of places with active sun – in mountains, seashore, and in the South in general.

Seborrheic skin

The word seborrhea comes from latin sebum – fat and Greek rheo – flow and this fact explains, in the main, the state of seborrheic skin – excessive sebum secretion in nasolabial folds, scalp, chest and back. The skin on these areas is shiny due to excessive sebum, hair are greesy with sticky locks. Excretory ducks of hair follicules are clogged with comedones –sebum and corneous plugs. Usually the reason of seborrhea are disturbances of nervous and endocrine body systems.
